APRIL 2008
TUNES OF DAWN
Biography: Plainsong Records
In 1993 six musicians with lots of ambitions and less experience came together to give life to their dream of handmade music. After the usual sort-out process (question being the standards) the band Delirium Tremance appeared on the world's stage, clearly devoted to Death Metal.
Within the next, actually successful years, highlighted by the demo-productions Begging for Hope (1995), Desillusionment (1996) and III(1998), a lot of experience was gained (yes, it is possible to play an instrument with 3,5 o/oo). But the sound was not flexible enough and the lyrics where starting to ask for real melodies. In long pub-sessions it was agreed to bid death metal farewell.
A new concept accompanied by changing the bands name to Tunes of Dawn
Was presented to the world in 1999. Moving away from the single tracked Death-Metal, into a musical form that was able to better reflect the diverse Ambitions and passions of the members. Searching for a good new name in vain as usual, Gothic-Junk-Metal-Rock, or in short Junk-Rock, was born, claiming to combine different elements of all types of hard rock-music into a style, that authentically reflects the band, without being dominated by a single taste.
This first steps in that direction can be witnessed on the production Tunes of Dawn (1999), containing old Death-Metal-elements as well as Gothic or simply fine Rock'n'Roll.
The band continued this path on through the change on guitar and the new recruitment of a keyboard player in the same year.. Both rented out from other bands in the beginning , they fell for the compository might and authentic atmosphere of the band. Praise the Lord, for the invention of beer.
The first production of this new quartet, 14 Minutes under Water (2000), gives a sight of the future. Created in a compact studio-stress-session, it shows the band happily divorced from Death-Metal. The process of creation of a style between Metal, Gothic, plain Rock and classical elements on it's way.
As is heard on the next production, Tomorrow is Friday (2002). Four different worlds on their way, looking for common grounds. Tomorrow is Friday already proves it found with it's wide range of musical ideas.
Any question, if the quartet would evolve on this way was answered with the album. How is this going to End (2005), earning the band a contract with the label Plainsong Records Berlin, that is going to release it on April, 25th 2005. Working together with producer and Scream-Silence Mastermind Hardy Fieting the potential of the band was finally unlocked, creating a style that is perfectly reflecting it's diversity of experiences and abilities. Not only can anyone find himself, but create himself in this mixture of the spontaneous and contemplative, this ranges from attack to collapse, from true love to bitter cynicism, from happy end to catharsis. This is how a new dawn brakes, accompanied by it's tunes.
Venia brings you a review of new Tunes of Dawn album - "Of Tragedies In The Morning & Solutions In The Evening".
TUNES OF DAWN
OF TRAGEDIES IN THE MORNING & SOLUTIONS IN THE EVENIG
(Plainsong Records, 2008)
90/100
Tunes Of Dawn is a really strong gothic rock band from Germany and their album ''Of Tragedies In The Morning & Solutions In The Evening'' is dark and isoteric with intesnive Dreadful Shadows feeling but also very developed personal sound. So, let's say something more.
This German gothic rockers stepped into 2008 with a great album that has a strenght to drawn you into sea of tears without any shadow of doubt. Every single note on the album sounds exactly like it is supposed for a note that is in the right on a right place and they all together creates little melancholic story that will touch you deeply.
Opening song is ''Fall'' that will with its perfectly dosed arrangement that in the same time brings drama and energy thrill fans of the sound that balance on the thin line between gothic rock and metal. It is followed by ''One Mornings Tragedy'' that will with its lyrics and a bit less dramatic arrangements be closer to those who prefer new gothic rock sound. But something that will thrill both, those devoted to dark gothic sound as much as those who likes more agreesive gothic metal, is rarely equanimity and specific voice color of singer and bass player Hagen Schneevoigt, no matter if it is about gentle gothic colors or those growl more characteristic for metal direction, that in combination with romantic-ark lines without any troubles finds its way to the heart.
The song that I'd winnow as one of my personal favorites is ''Love Ends Suicide'' that with its bittersweet parts will lead you, if you let it, to melancolic-romantic word of Tunes Of Dawn in which are you invited with this album that doesn't need much time to ''get into ear'' and stays there.
Each guitar part, acoustic or rock harmonies, dynamically completely fits into the mood of the album. The only reproach to it is, in my opinion, a kind of concentracion lose in the songs ''Motorcycle Baby'' and ''I'ts All Tears'' that vocally and instrumentally differ from other songs on the album and in some elements somewhat impair its integrity and harmony. However, ''Of Tragedies In The Morning & Solutions In The Evening'' is one of the best gothic rock parts that in its first moths brought year 2008!
