ARTIST
OF THE MONTH: JANUARY 2007
EMILIE
AUTUMN
This
unconventional, although classically educated artist,
came upon the alternative scene with her album Enchant.
Her very first album, though, was On a day..., which was
released when she was only 17-years-old. Her first gothic-rock
single was Chambermaid, and in 2004 she sung on Courtney
Love's America's Sweetheart, which was released by Virgin
Records. In 2005, she was a special guest on Billy Corgan's
solo-album The future embrace.
Classified by the critics and her fans as dark cabaret,
she definitely breaks through all the barriers of labelling.
Her second album is recently released Opheliac. It is
probably best to use her own words in classifying it,
as she called it Victorianindustrial. The album takes
the gothic genre into new dimensions her violin is under
the rule of her concept of woman, water and madness, but
with a touch of electro-industrial.
Probably the best tracks on the album are Gothic Lolita,
Dead Is The New Alive, I Want My Innocence Back, The Art
Of Suicide, Misery Loves Company, but among them all the
title track Opheliac is to be put the stress on.
So, what is special about Emilie Autumn is that she has
an interesting voice, and plays innovative and dynamic
melodies, which are easy-listening at the same time. The
album is made up of 20 songs, every one of which has its
own story behind it. One of the most noticable things
about Emilie is that she is eccentric, elegant, scandalous
and innovative, all combined together in music that is
different every time you listen to it.
Apart from being a musician, Emilie has other creative
ambitions, so when she's not on tour or in the studio,
she is a designer for Mistress, her very own fashion brand.
She designed costumes for Corgan's 2005 video Walking
shade. This creative American girl also writes and illustrates.
She is to be recommended to all the lovers of darkwave
and dark cabaret, but also to everyone who know quality
music and are not afraid of a strong personality that
she is. You will be overwhelmed by her talent!
